John A. Wexler is an American numismatist, author, researcher, and longtime specialist in error and variety coins. A retired high school mathematics teacher, Wexler became one of the hobby’s best-known authorities on doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, and other die varieties in United States coinage.
He served as editor of Error-Variety News and was chairman of the board for Collectors of Numismatic Errors (CONE). He also contributed the long-running “Varieties Notebook” column to Coin World from November 1997 until 2023, helping generations of collectors learn how to identify and understand important die varieties.
Wexler co-authored The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents with Kevin Flynn and also worked with John W. Bordner on references covering Lincoln Memorial cent repunched mintmark varieties. His many other works include books on Jefferson nickel doubled dies, Washington quarter doubled dies, Eisenhower dollars, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Franklin and Kennedy half dollars, and Lincoln cent mintmark varieties.
His work has been especially important to collectors who enjoy variety attribution and “treasure hunting” through rolls, collections, and dealer stock. By documenting pickup points, diagnostics, and variety classifications, Wexler helped make advanced variety collecting more accessible to everyday collectors.
In 1988, he was inducted into the CONECA Hall of Fame, and in 2021 he was included in Coin World’s list of The Most Influential People in Numismatics 1960–2020.
