2026 Team USA Silver Eagle: First Graded Example of a 403 Coin Issue Heads to Auction

On August 6, dozens of American Winter Olympians and Paralympians walked out of the White House holding a coin that nobody else could buy. Less than two months later, the first graded 2026 Team USA Silver Eagle is on the block at GreatCollections: a Philadelphia proof bearing the TEAM USA privy mark, certified PCGS Proof-70 Deep Cameo and offered without reserve until Sunday, October 18.

The number that matters is 403. According to GreatCollections, that is the entire mintage, which would make this the lowest mintage American Silver Eagle ever produced, in a series whose scarcest collector issues have always been counted in the tens of thousands. And unlike the series’ other limited issues, this one never went on sale. Every example that reaches the market will have to come from an athlete, one coin at a time.

A gift from the White House

The occasion was a celebration of Team USA’s performance at the Milano Cortina Winter Games in Italy. President Donald Trump hosted the athletes on August 6, 2026, after a Games in which the U.S. Olympic team won 12 gold medals, a record for Team USA, and 33 medals overall, while the Paralympic team added 24 medals of its own, 13 of them gold. Each athlete received a 2026 proof Silver Eagle carrying the TEAM USA privy mark.

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach described the coins as a tribute both to the athletes and to the craftsmanship of the U.S. Mint, but at the time offered few production details and did not say whether any examples beyond those presented might ever reach collectors. The answer, it turns out, was three, and they are not going anywhere.

403 struck, three kept

All 403 coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Four hundred were set aside for the White House event, and the remaining three were retained as United States Heritage Assets, placing them in the government’s permanent keeping. Functionally, the collector supply is the 400 coins now spread across a national roster of athletes.

The coin itself is a standard proof Silver Eagle in every respect but one: Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty on the obverse, Emily S. Damstra’s eagle on the reverse with the P mintmark, one ounce of .999 fine silver. The difference sits in the right obverse field, where the TEAM USA privy mark is placed above IN GOD WE TRUST. Each coin was presented in government packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity naming both TEAM USA and Milano Cortina.

Nor is this the only privy marked Silver Eagle of the year. The anniversary program has already produced dual dated 1776~2026 “250” privy mark editions. What sets the Team USA issue apart is not the device on the coin but the list of people who received it.

The lowest mintage Silver Eagle on record

The American Silver Eagle has been struck since 1986, and GreatCollections calls it the most popular coin series in the world. For most of those four decades, the key to the series has been the 1995-W proof, with a mintage of 30,125 and available only inside the Mint’s 10th Anniversary proof set. The 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof, limited to 30,000 pieces, joined it as the other recognised key. The Team USA issue has roughly one seventy-fifth the mintage of either.

Why the “230” comparison only goes so far

GreatCollections points to the 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair High Relief gold coin, with its “230” privy mark, as the closest modern parallel. On paper it is the rarer coin. In practice, the two issues behave very differently.

All 230 of the Flowing Hair pieces were auctioned on behalf of the U.S. Mint on December 12, 2024, realizing $8.23 million in total, and GreatCollections has since resold several examples at prices up to $71,562. The whole supply arrived at once, a market formed around it, and collectors have had a visible pool of coins to price against ever since.

The Team USA coins have no such pool. They sit with individual athletes across the country, many of whom will keep them for life. GreatCollections expects examples to surface one here and one there over many years, and some never to be graded or sold at all. That is a different kind of scarcity: not simply few coins, but no way of knowing when the next one will appear.

How the first one reached the block

The coin on offer arrived with a question rather than a pedigree. According to GreatCollections president Ian Russell, the consignor got in touch to ask whether it was an ordinary Silver Eagle or something more. Russell says his team had not heard of the August 6 celebration at first, but research confirmed an official U.S. Mint issue struck in strictly limited numbers. The firm sent it to PCGS, which returned the perfect grade of Proof-70 Deep Cameo.

PCGS has attributed the coin as the “First Example,” a designation that records it as the first of the issue certified by a major grading service. It does not mean the first coin struck. The Certificate of Authenticity has been encapsulated by PCGS alongside it, and the original government packaging is included in the lot.

The 2026 Team USA Silver Eagle at GreatCollections

The coin is GreatCollections item 2263401, offered unreserved, with bidding closing on Sunday, October 18, 2026. As of September 29, it stood at $16,500 after 45 bids, with more than 100 GreatCollections members tracking the lot. Russell has said he expects significant bidding throughout, observing that “a mintage of 403 is tiny for a Silver Eagle.” GreatCollections is the first auction house to offer a certified example.

One at a time

Whatever the final price on October 18, it will set the first public benchmark for the 2026 Team USA Silver Eagle, and every future appearance will be measured against it. With 400 coins scattered across a roster of Olympians and Paralympians, the next one could surface next month or in twenty years. For a series that has spent four decades defining rarity in the tens of thousands, that uncertainty may prove to be the most valuable thing about it.
